UPDATE: This post was made as Shinn Shots Photography and does not represent the style or goals of Blue Space Photography. Because I believe in knowing where you’ve come from, I’ve left this here as a reminder of the journey that led me to where I am today. I now only shoot storytelling sessions, so be sure to check out my current work in more recent posts! – Lauren
The day I turned 30, I met my sister for a last minute girls weekend away in Chattanooga, Tennessee. (And for those who haven’t yet visited Chattanooga, I would highly recommend it. It has become one of my favorite cities!) My sister and I didn’t have a picture of just the two of us since my wedding almost 7 years ago. When I told my sister that I wanted to set up my studio in a hotel room, she gave me that “I think you’re really crazy” look, but she agreed to it anyway. I think our photo shoot was one of the best things I could have done on my birthday! We had nothing but fun as we danced around the room and made complete fools of ourselves. And I have the pictures to prove it! They will always remind me of our silly girls’ weekend together and the day that I turned 30.
When I got a call about photographing 6 young ladies who were getting dolled up and going out to dinner for Annika’s birthday, I was thrilled!
Not that it matters at these sorts of sessions. Part of what I love about these girly birthday sessions is how easy they are. Not to mention how much fun! The girls just hang out and talk, making each other laugh with crazy antics and inside jokes. I get the best interaction shots with genuine emotion. I’m starting to think that all portraits should be taken this way!
Of course, at this session, I realized a few things…
1) I’m closer to having a 14 year old daughter than I am to being 14 myself.
Wow. That’s crazy. It’s amazing how old you get when you’re not paying attention.
2) I’m really out of shape.
This wasn’t really news to me, but running back and forth to the house for a lens here and a stool there reminded me that I need to start exercising again.
3) And with two kids to keep me busy, I’m severely out of touch with what’s cool nowadays.
I have some catching up to do so that I can keep up with this young crowd.
Of course, this group of girls made it easy to blend in…I was just along for the ride. And I can get some amazing pictures on the way.
Annika, thanks again for having me out to photograph you and your friends as you celebrated turning another year older. You are all so beautiful and so much fun! I had such a great time – I’m hoping it can become an annual tradition!
