UPDATE: This post was made as Shinn Shots Photography and does not represent the style or goals of Blue Space Photography. Because I believe in knowing where you’ve come from, I’ve left this here as a reminder of the journey that led me to where I am today. I now only shoot storytelling sessions, so be sure to check out my current work in more recent posts! – Lauren
Melissa emailed me just before Thanksgiving to see if I was available to take pictures the weekend after Thanksgiving. Her sisters and their kiddos were all going to be together and Melissa wanted to check some gifts off her Christmas list. You’ve got to love giving pictures as presents…have a session…order pictures…wrap ’em up…and done!
We started bright and early on Sunday in Melissa’s back yard – and what a fabulous backyard she has! I came across a large rock in the woods and realized I wouldn’t need any of the props I’d bought. Melissa had requested more formal, posed shots and I knew the rock would be a perfect, natural looking posing place.
It was a bit chilly during our session, and some of the kiddos got those rudolf noses. (Yes, those can be edited out.) We all had a great time though! This was by far one of the easiest kid sessions I’ve ever done! Even Ronan, the two-year-old, sat still and smiled! And his brothers, Murphy (5) and Quinn (9) were awesome too. They all have such sweet spirits.
I also got to meet their cousins Bryant (8) and Wiley (7). They had a bit more energy, but they were still super helpful and willing to help. That’s asking a lot of boys during a (blech!) photo session. I adore how the pictures of the boys with their mom turned out. Not many smiles, but their faces just look so sweet and calm snuggled up next to mom.
Of course, I find ways to make sessions fun, even for the boys. There may have been a few fart jokes and some suggestions to pick each others’ noses. And I always make sure to take advantage of my unpaid assistance – each boy also took a turn on my back…on a step stool…entertaining their brothers. Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten how old I am! I was feeling my back exercises for the rest of the weekend. It was worth it though, when you get smiles like these.
I couldn’t believe that out of 5 boys, there was only one ham. Wiley loved making funny faces for the camera. There’s just something so iconic about a boy and his silly face.
We also took some pictures of the three sisters together. I held back on the fart jokes for them since they seemed to be able to look and smile and the camera without any help 🙂
Thanks for calling me up at the last minute to come out, Melissa! I had so much fun and loved hanging out with your boys.
